The Lebanese Dinner and Drawdown was held on Saturday, August 25th, 2018, at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School. Over 250 people attended this event, which benefits the many ministries of Catholic Social Services of Montgomery. Tickets included dinner for two and the chance to participate in the drawdown and the silent and live auctions. The grand prize was $5,000. Among the guests in attendance was the most Reverend Archbishop Rodi who offered a blessing at the beginning of the meal.
Over 50 volunteers, including Boy Scouts from Troop 4 from St Bede’s church in Montgomery, students from MCPS, CSS board members and employees, and many friends of CSS helped by selling tickets, cooking, setting up the room, organizing and displaying the silent auction items, serving food, and cleaning up at the conclusion of the dinner. Dan Luehrs, fundraising chairman of the board, said “the volunteers were amazing during the last three months, preparing for the event and absolutely critical to making the event such a wonderful success.”
The menu for the evening included baked kibbee (ground meat and spices), yubra (stuffed grape leaves), coosa (stuffed squash), lubee (green beans), basmati rice, Lebanese salata (salad), hummus, pita bread, and for dessert – barazik cookie and baklewa. Tea, water, soft drinks, wine, and beer were also available thanks to the generosity of donors. The main courses were prepared by generous donors, volunteers, and restaurant owners, using recipes of local Lebanese American families. Desserts were ordered from a Middle Eastern bakery in Michigan.
The event was very successful as guests truly enjoyed the meal, bid on the more than 200 silent auction items, and anxiously checked the drawdown board to see if their number was still present. John Sadie, one of the many Lebanese Catholics in Montgomery, emceed the evening and surprised attendees with numerous door prizes. An hour into the drawdown, Kristin Sadie Schwarz led people into a traditional Lebanese dance, the Dabke, that snaked around the tables, adding dancers here and there.
Upcoming events to support Catholic Social Services of Montgomery include Italian Home Dinners (distributed through local churches this fall) and the Saints & Sinners Walk and Run in March 2019. Come join the fun!
